What is Hardscape?
Hardscape describes the part of the landscape that is not alive. This includes retaining walls, walkways, patios, and any other structure. Positioning the elements of the hardscape within the landscape plays a key role in making the area pleasing to the eye.
Any project can be designed in any number of styles, and the hardscaping has a great role in the look and feel of any landscaping project. Paver patios and firepits are elements of hardscapes that are not only visually appealing; they also extend the family’s living space.
During the landscape design process, elements of the hardscape are usually the first to be considered. Landscape designers will start by evaluating how the land sits and then begin examining the best way to blend the existing natural elements with their vision and that of the property owner.
Pathways are often the first piece of hardscape installed. Pathways may be constructed of crushed gravel, brick, pavers, woodchips, and other types of materials. These pathways provide a map of the area and determine how it flows with the landscape and the way people will use the area. When the elements of the softscape, such as shrubs and flowerbeds, have been installed the landscape designer can choose other sections of the projects where additional hardscape elements could be added.
